I bought a tank at the second hand store. Wiped it out added water bought fish and put them in the tank. Then I saw a tiny tag that said critter cage do not fill with water. It seems fine with the water in it. I am worried if there is additives like for bacteria or anything that I need to add or is there some other serious problem that I need to take them out of there? Or will they be fine?

I'm pretty sure that the reason it says not to put water in it is because critter cages are not water tight. If it's not leaking it should be fine, I wouldn't put a whole lot of gravel or decorations in it because it may not be able to support the weight.

I just went up and asked the store clerk today and he said because the critter cage has a wire lid and the water can splash out.
I thought gee if that's all then no problem.

Somebody once told me that the bacteria from a snake or rodent is why you shouldn't convert but then they said they never said that.

Now I just need to figure out how to get the water pump suction going.

I put a few rocks and one small bag of non dyed gravel in it. The decorations are so expensive.

The main problem with critter tanks being turned into water tanks is that the silicone used to hold the edges together dries out and cracks...

If there is always water in it then the silicone stays moist.

If it isn't leaking and the silicone still feels squishy then it will be fine :)

Darn, if only I lived closer to you NoHelp! I have a ton of ornaments, really pretty asian looking rocks and bridges, they don't fit in my new tank so they are in storage!

I was wondering about the silicone. It isn't dried out.
My pump quit working and I went and bought another. It has been plugged in for a few hours now and the water is still cloudy. Not sure what to do about that.

I had the same problem a few weeks ago before I bought my new tank...
Still not sure what caused it but it was suggested to me to buy a water clearing product... Mine was called "Crystal Clear" it cleared it within 2 days. It is fairly cheap too, mine cost $5 and I still have over 3/4 of a bottle left.
