Your boyfriend's condition is called pneumothorax and is usually caused by traumatic injury to the chest or a compromised lung from disease. The needle will allow his lung to expand but can re-occur resulting in further surgery.

Pneumothorax can be corrected. With careful monitoring and care of his lungs he will be okay, at least that is what normally happens. Not knowing his other medical conditions or lifestyle it is difficult to answer your question.

Diagnosis cannot be given on this board.
