Hey everyone this is katy I'm new I am looking for some one who can help me. My husband and I got a blue heeler puppy about 4 months ago. We have got this dog every chew toy known to man and he still insists on chewing on everything else. He has chewed through my husbands new camo hunting pants and most recently he chewed thorugh the bottom of his kennal and through the carpet in my house all the way to the base board on the floor. I realize its normal puppy behavior to chew but this is crazy this can't be normal. He's fed plenty of food, gets treats and still has to chew on something . My husband and I are at the end of our rope with this dog we love him but something has to be done . Can't anyone help me.

The puppy has NO clue that things are NOT to be chewed on. Puppies, (like babies) want to put ANYTHING they can into their mouths.

Puppies chew for several reasons. The chewing relieves stress... it CALMS THEM. Even adult dogs chew.

Puppies also are cutting teeth at about 4 months and it FEELS GOOD on their irritated / painful gums.
(Ice cubes are also good for teething puppies).

The only real solution is to PUT EVERYTHING that is NOT to be chewed on OUT OF REACH

The puppy should NEVER be given free run of your house UNLESS YOU ARE WATCHING the pup, (just like a 1 year old human starting to explore the new world) or have it leashed to you. You need to know exactly what the pup is doing all the time (like a child) When the pup realizes the routine and "learns" what is expected-you can give the pup "free run of the house". It just takes time-they are like little kids- With a lot of attention while they are learning as a pup-you will see how fast they want to please you all the time. They like to be with people-not left alone with toys. Its not always possible if you both work-Our pup did much the same-dug up the carpet and tried to get out (we think) becaue he was left alone too long while we were at work. He out grew that and learned the routine. Eventually the pup will quit chewing! You can get bitter apple at pet supply stores to spray on things you don't want the pup to chew on-But I didn't like spraying "everything" It won't be much longer-dont give up- the pups still learning.The more time you spend with the pup the happier he/she will be (and the two of you) and you will see him/her out grow this chewing stage soon- -Janna
