Flange to floor measurements for wax ring
When replacing wax ring what's the rule of thumb for the size of the wax ring. What I mean to ask, is the ring supposed to be flush with the floor. I notice they have rings with extensions. How do I measure for this? I have sub floor and tile. Thanks for info.

It would be good if you can get it where the entire thickness of the wax ring is above the floor level, this would insure a good seal with the commode bowl. But a 1/2 inch above that will still work, it will just squeeze the was out more.

    Hi Shane...

Typically, the closet flange sits on top of the finished floor, so the best scenario would be for the wax ring to sit on top of the flange as mentioned by Letmetellu...

If the flange doesn't sit on top of the finished floor then it may or may not be necessary to install closet flange extensions...

In this case, if the flange is 1/2" below the finish floor, then an extra thick wax gasket may work fine. Anything where the closet flange ends up over 1/2" below the finish floor and I recommend using closet flange extension kits... see pictures. The old flange needs to be cleaned properly and the new extension flanges need to be secured properly to create a water-tight seal at the flange. They are available at all home supply stores.

Let us know if you have more questions...

We all say pretty much the same thing but in many different ways. I like to say the top of the flange must be flush with the floor or the bottom of the flange flush with the floor.
