    Mate, nothing lasts forever. Amalgam fillings can last for 20+ years, it just depends on where they are placed, how big they are, the oral hygiene of the person, etc, etc, etc. Amalgam fillings are so strong in fact, that they can cause fractures over time, as amalgam in its nature is ridgid, and natural tooth structure flexes.
