THIS PROBLEM HAS ARISEN WHILE trying to CORRECT A FAUCET LEAK PROBLEM ON A MOEN SINGLE HANDLE TUB/SHOWER FAUCET FIXTURE MODEL 82000, 2300 SERIES.



SCENARIO

OK after getting the data and the walk through to do this, I couldn't get the handle off. I couldn't see weather or not the set screw or hex screw was out it looked like it was as the allen wrench wouldn't catch anything in there.

So, after looking and thinking I saw just a hole moving over metal and that the handle was just stuck on due to buildup over the years on the surfaces I horsed it off. Half the stem came off (it brokeoff right at the top of the cartridge)


I ordered the cartridge replacement kit for it (should be here Thursday)

2 questions

1. How can I get that stinking screw out of the handle. I was thinking the only way is probably drill it out. The handle stop, the piece of the stem that broke off and the connecting screw are still in the handle hub because I can't get that set screw out.

2. Because I broke the stem (at the place where it starts protruding from the cartridge) I assume its going to make it harder to get the cartridge out. I was thinking, the kit will come with that cartridge twisting tool, if I am able to use that after I pull the retainer clip off, I should be able to get the cartridge out, right. What I mean here is it appears, at least in thought that the exposed part of the stem that broke off shouldn't be a reason I can't get it out.

Before I tell you the that you might as well either drill the screw out or simply go to a plumbing shop and purchase a new handle let me ask a question? What's all this about?( See below) You're complaining because you figure you're being ignored? You've only put up three posts and the first two were complaints. Have you posted under a different name? Please explain!

Yes it will make the cartridge more difficult to remove because by breaking the stem off,( and how in hell did you do that?) the opportunity to use the Moen Cartridge Puller is gone. Use the nylon cartridge twisting tool to get the
Cartridge to turn. What's binding it is the swollen "O" rings and once you break the hold the "O" rings have the cartridge should pull right of the valve

The way I see it you have only two options. Drill the set screw out and get a new set screw or order a new handle. Good luck, tom

I had no problem getting the new cartridge in place. Now there is no leak however the handle still isn't on.:mad: Trying to drill screw out (an easy out didn't work) I think it is stainless.

I may just have to see if there is some kind of replacement handle being sold that is compatible to this moen item. Really don't want to wait to get another part shipped from them.

I read through all the threads and don't see the details so I'll ask. Apologies if it's here and I missed it. I also have a Moen cartridge, frozen in place, and while using the Moen cartridge wrench, I broke the stem. My cartridge must be petrified in place, as it would not budge and all the wiggling weakend the stem and her I sit thinking about what to do next to get the cartridge out. Anyone have any ideas? Thanks.

I wish you has contacted us sooner. What happens is that the "O" rings in the cartridge swell and binds the cartridge to the valve body. Moen makes a cartridge puller,(see image)just for those stubborn cartridges. However, they screw into the top of the stem and act like a wheel puller and you've broke the stem. The only thing you can do id to wedge something in the cartridge and try to twist it. Once you get it to turn you've broken the bond and the cartridge will pull out. Good luck, Tom

Thank you, speedball1. I don't think there was anything else I could have tried. I used 3 kinds of lubricants and vinegar to try to loosen the cartridge before I resigned and called the plumber. $75 and entire hour later, my old cartridge was removed but in dozens of little pieces, except of course the O rings! He used every drill bit and lubricant in his tool box. He said it was the worst he had ever seen.
