Earth's atmosphere - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

    Wikipedia has a good explanation.

You can't really draw a line to say what the height is, because the atmosphere just gets thinner and thinner the further you go out. However we have several useful definitions. The Scale height (the point where the pressure has decreased by a factor of e) of the Earth's atmosphere is about 8km, varying by a few km depending on the temperature.
