I had an agreement with a Family Lawyer in Michigan. I would work on her house and she would represent me in a change of domicile case in Macomb County. I did the work as discussed and she represented me. We never signed anything for her services. I am now being threatened by another law firm in MI saying I owe $2400 for her services. They say they will have their associates in TN (where I now live) take me to court and win. They claim a signed contract isn't necessary and I have to pay. Is this true? The research I've done shows a contract is required for any "goods sold" over $1000. I believe I'm in the right, but I don't like when lawyers threaten me. Anyone who is knowledgeable in this area would be appreciated. Thank you!

If you had no dealings with this law firm, let them sue you. They can't prove a thing.

If they can prove that they did work on your behalf, they may have a case. However, if they did the work under contract to your attorney and you were unaware of it they shouldn't have a case against you.

The first thing you need to do is tell them to provide you with an itemized bill for the work they claim they did and what authorization they had to do that work.
