I'm not sure, but I think it depends on faith. I worked in a nursing home when I was younger and it seemed that Catholics were very systematic about it. Most other faiths it varied completely by church.
I think talk to the person what he wants to pray for and how he wants to do it.
I agree with Triund on this.
Also does the dying person want to you to pray for or with him/her?
Or can the person who is dying answer that question?
Some can not, then I suggest that we pray for God's mercy on his/her soul.
I know of one person who asked not to be prayed for them to live longer for they were in such pain that they did not want it to continue, but rather to pray for God's mercy on her soul.
Some drying people want prayers for those close to them who are left behind so that they can cope well with they loss and continue to live life to its fullest.
Each person will probably ask for prayers for that which concerns them most at this particular very important time of their life on earth.
In my case I would want people to prayer for God's mercy on my soul and also for my loved ones that they will live their lives well after I am gone.
Peace and kindness,
Fred
Right on Fred
Not to be a wordsmith about the wording of the question. But I was never given the opportunity to pray with or for someone that experienced a sudden death.
homesell,
Thanks
Fred
I think you need to follow your heart.I think a hand held and the power of your love is often the best prayer there is.The gesture of love speaks volumes.
You could also ask the person(if that applies) would you like to pray?
artlady
Yes.
Very Good.
Fred
Pray from the heart.
God will give you the words you need at anytime.

Jesushelper76,
Good advice.
Fred
As long as you don't try to condem them then I think it is perfectly normal to pray with the dying. Just ask them if you can pray with them or for them
Pokerface5,
I think you are right about that.
