Depends on the crime. 25 years is usually the max.

Mandatory sentencing - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

In Australia, life imprisonment is mandatory for murder in Queensland, South Australia, and the Northern Territory. Life imprisonment is only mandatory in the other states, with a non-parole period of at least 20 years, if a criminal is convicted of the murder of a police officer.

This can't be right... is it?

----- so where are you or the unfortunate soul located in australia?

    I live in Australia, Queensland.
It's for Senior Legal Studies (Grade 11) and I have to do a speech and I have two murder cases and how it puts the spotlight on the jury system of how so many people get away with 'manslaughter' when it really should have been murder.

I think it was our of 169 criminal cases between 2004-2006 only 13 were passed off as murder.

Because of Mens Rea and Malice Aforethought and all those what I call excuses to get off Murder.
