Hi All,

Can anyone point me in the right direction? I need to tap into an existing Cast Iron 4" Waste Stack to add a connection for a washing machine. I found "Flexible Tap Saddles" that look like they would do the trick http://www.fernco.com/TS.asp but am not sure what I will need to cut a hole in this pipe.

I basically need to do this once to help out my brother in a renovation project.

As our resident Plumbing Expert is out at the moment, I'll pipe in (:D ) with my 1.5 cents worth:

To cut the stack, I'd use a drill to drill many holes in the shape of a circle that's the size of what you're putting into it (1.5" I presume), then use a dremel to cut the bits between the circles leaving the 1.5" hole.

Be careful to not let the piece you cut out drop into the stack.

I can't add much to Ricks excellent answer except that you must make sure you grind off the burrs and rough edges. Otherwise you'll be snaking a lot of blockages. And make the hole and your washer drain pipes 2 inch instead of 1 1/2".Good luck, Tom

L have clay tile sewer line not sure what size it is because it is egg shape, need to know what size tap saddle to get my brother said it was 5" that was standard size is that true.

Without knowing the size of the clay pipe I can't tell what size saddle you need here.

Heck, why not just purchase a 4", a 5" , and a 6" saddle and see which one fits best and then return the ones that you don't use?

Also note that saddles are not code in most states so if you want to do this by following plumbing codes you will actually want to cut a new PVC plastic (or ABS plastic) WYE fitting into the line. Here, you would use an angle grinder or similar tool to cut the clay pipe, and join the new plastic fittings using FERNCO COUPLINGS (big rubber coupling made for clay pipes and other underground pipes).

Finally, why exactly are you tapping into the clay line... what will be on the new line? Tell me this information and I can tell you what size the new drain line needs to be to pick up the new fixtures, OK?
