Proposed changes in 2007 federal tax returns
We were recently sent a "propsed change" to our 2007 tax returns. I was not aware when doing the taxes that year that I had to file a schedule D when selling securities. So, I didn't. ETrade sent the information to the IRS and because we had not included schedule D, it looked as if we had a zero cost basis for those stocks sold. I did the paper work requested of me about 3-4 weeks ago and sent that paperwork to the IRS.

I've not heard anything from the IRS. Is there a way to check the status other than calling?

    Thank you,
    Nellie

Not unless you want to write another letter. They usually have a lot of inventory and should write you a letter back regarding their decision. However if they don't get to it in a certain amount of time,( 4 weeks? I think), you will receive an automated letter telling you they have received your "correspondence" and haven't had time to review it yet, (or something to that effect.) You should be receiving that letter soon. My main concern would be if they have actually received it or not, which they should be able to tell by now. Some IRS service centers can actually see your scanned correspondence and others can only see if "something" was received from you, but you would have to call them. I would call the number on your letter not the generic 1-800-829-1040 if you decide to call. (Mondays are generally high call volume days.) Their hours are 7AM-10PM your local time. Good luck!
