The formula is:-
1) Net profit/loss for the period.
2) Plus Retained Earning brought forward.
3) Less Withdrawals.
= 4) Retained earnings at END.

Let us get this clear at the outset.
When a dividend is paid from retained earnings there is a REDUCTION not an ADDITION.

I just love that you do people's homework for them. Especially after finding out you lectured at colleges for nine years. Wow. Something's wrong with that picture.
We need to have a few changes!
Members are screaming for our help and assistance.
Have you ever been on your own, with no one to turn to.
I honestly think that some of our experts
Are hiding behind this rule.
My past history tells me we must abide by our conscience.
The logo of our Australian Accounting Society
Used to say this:-
" Teach all you know to your students and then launch them into a higher sphere."
My suggestion is:-
Open the gates a little wider.
Open your generosity of helping others
Less fortunate than yourself.
It is up to the student to know how far he/she can go.
Most of them are very genuine and need more
Of our help.
QUOTING A PERFECT EXAMPLE :-
A. sUPPOSE THE FIRM PAID OUT IN CASH DIVIDENDS OF $21,000.WHAT IS THE ADDITION TO RETAINED EARNINGS?
What is your comment here Mr Morgaine?
First of all, many of the people who come here actually just want someone to do their homework for them. They take advantage of people like you.
Second, doing someone's homework for them is unethical. There is nothing wrong with "helping" someone, but that isn't the same as doing their homework for them.
Third, giving all the answers away and doing someone's homework for them isn't helping them. It's hurting them. This is akin to never teaching a kid to do anything for himself and growing up completely helpless. (And I see a lot of college students these days who are helpless. These people are our future? Spooky.)
Fourth, seeing just an answer most of the time doesn't help someone understand how it is done. Sometimes it does, when the person in question already has a pretty decent idea of what's going on and just needs a little shove in the right direction. But more often than not, it doesn't.
I am perfectly willing to help people. I am not willing to do their homework for them. That doesn't mean I'm not generous, nor that I'm not open. I am not "hiding" behind this rule. The rule exists for a reason - a good reason as far as I'm concerned. I AM abiding by my conscience, not hiding behind rules. (If I don't care to answer something, I can simple not answer it. I don't need a rule for an excuse.) Because there are quite a few people out there who need their hands held and really do just want someone to do their work for them, I want to see first that they have made some effort to do the work -- or if they ask some specific thing about what they don't understand, I can explain that.
When they present a problem only and show no work and say nothing, then it could very easily be one of the ones who just wants their work done for them. If that is not the case, they can always reply after someone points them to the link. Hmm -- how often do they not bother? Why is that I wonder?
"Teach all you know to your students" is not the same thing as doing their work for them.
I think you should shut up... by having him do the example it shows the students what they should be doing...
The thread is eight months old and you're dragging it up just to tell me to shut up? Perhaps you should hang around the site a bit more before you start telling people to shut up.
I've also tutored privately for 15 years, meaning I'm working right with tutors personally and up front, not standing in front of a classroom. I DO know a bit about what I'm talking about. I already said that most of the time just seeing the answer to something doesn't help a student understand it, and yes, I DO know what I'm talking about. But obviously you paid no attention to anything I actually said...
