    Electrical Upgrade
I have a 2 family dwelling that needs an upgrade of amps. I currently have 2 breaker boxes with 60 amps each. Totalling 120 amperes. I need to make each breaker box at 100 ampes each. Totaling 200 amperes. How do I accomplish this task at hand. The electrical supply comes from a power line not underneath.

Midwest Electric Products, Inc. has a meter base with two disconnects. If you power company allows it, they could be used.

You may need a service upgrade and you may have to replace each panel.

In theory common areas should not be charged to one tenant,

You may want to install sub-metering yourself or actually have two separate services.

You need to consult with your local power company to learn their requirements, metering equipment, and service location.

They may require that they cut the line and set the meters to allow the service to be changed.

I do know that some utilities, New Hampshire for example, the utility furnishes and installs the meter socket and riser.

Check with your local inspector to learn what their rules, codes and regulations are.

Since this is a two family, most, if not all, states do not allow homeowners do their own work in a multifamily.

Here, all inspectors require a third meter and panel be available for common areas for 2 family dwellings and larger.
