Fresh installed Windows Server on XP Machine, HD size is wrong!
OK. I recently got a new PC (not new but not old) I want use this as my server at home on my network. I want to do the same thing I did with my virtual server (those people who are aware of me know what I'm saying). I got this new PC yesterday and come to find out the CD/DVD tray doesn't work. I tried to fix it buty instead just put the Server files on a thumbdrive and used the usb to get them on the PC. Since I didn't boot off this PC I had to simply do a fresh install while XP was running.

This PC has an 80GB hard drive. But when It asked what partition I wanted to use I said the same one that XP was on. ( I figured I could erase XP later and take it's free space) but when all was said and done. I only have one OS (Windows Server) and it says it's only a 30GB hard drive. WHere did the 50 go?

If you have any questions let me know!

I was in a hurry to type this as I was on my way to school.

If you don't need the XP install why not simply remove ALL the partitions and format?

I didn't know if I could do that because I'm using a thumbdrive to install. I'm not using an install CD.

I was unsure if I could boot off mt thumbdrive!

Hmm, so are you installing this as an upgrade on top of XP or "side by side" on the same partition ?

And yes you can boot from a USB device, need to check the bios for that option.

OK I checked the bios and I was able to "attempt" to boot from my thumbdrive. When I tried it just say there with a blinking prompt. Does the files need to be at the first layer of the thumbdrive and not inside files?

Also I can't upgrade because when I start the install it says this version of XP is not cabpable of upgrading to this type of Windows Server. SO the only other option was to do a fresh install. I thought by doing this it would create a dual-boot, since I installed on the same partition. But it didn't. I don't want XP at all. I just want server but with all 80 GIG instead of just 37GIG

Is there anything I can do after the fact. I've got Windows Server Enterprise up and running.

I must admit I have found booting to USB to be a complete pain in the rear, so I burn anything to CD.
Does seem odd mind that it insisted you did an advanced install and didn't prompt to format the disc.
Which server are you installing ?

OK. I hate to be a pain but I have gone up and set up this srver as my domain controller w/AD, DHCP server and DNS server.

I have shut-off the DHCP function on my router.

If I have another PC on the network and it's set to automatically receive IP's and I manually set the DNS IP, and I am able to get online. Does that mean it all worked out.

You should right click on my computer and go to manage and then disk management. See if the computer sees the whole drive or if it is a sectoring problem. If the parittion is there for 30gb and 50gb or so is unused, then a partitioning software could expand it for you. If disk management does not see the whole drive, then you will have to re-format the drive to get the correct sector sizing. If by chance there is an unknown partition. It could be one from HP, Dell or some other company for restoration files. You can delete it and then expand the partition...

I just wanted to say a little, first it sounds like it tried to do a clean install over the old XP. I have done that... not on purpose. But I have never heard of being able to put XP next to XP of the same version. I don't see why there is any problem with using a usb instead... Ive never had a problem.
That could explain why it didn't ask about a partition though.

    OK. Joel:
I did go into disk management and it only sees the ard drive as being 37gb. I am not going to worry about reinstalling still I've already setup and am currently utilizing the services of domain controller/AD, DHCP, DNS, WINS servers.

    FlyingNeonBears:
This isn't XP I'm talking about. What happened was it just installed over the old OS but I'm wondering why it's only showing 37 GB instead of 80 GB.

BUT LIKE I TOLD JOEL. I AM NO LONGER WORRYING ABOUT IT SINCE I HAVE EVERYTHING UP AND RUNNING AND 37GB WILL DO FINE FOR WHAT I NEED!

    THREAD CLOSED!
