Hi
I have a Delta 3 HP -220 volt single phase table saw in my garage but do not have a 220 volt outlet in the garage. I was considering making an extension cord to run from the garage to the nearby laundry room where I could plug into the 220 volt clothes dryer outlet.
The dryer has a circuit breaker rated at 30 amps. The table saw motor is rated 12.4 amps.
Could there be damage to the motor?

You could.

If the saw contains a thermal or an integral starter with overloads, then your fine.

If this is for occaisional use, then your fine.

What is the amperage of the saw and how long is the extension cord

His post said 12.4 AMPS.

Which makes the extension cord at least 14 AWG. 12 AWG may be preferred.

The saw motor is rated at 12.4 amps and I was planning on a 40-50 foot extension cord.

Thermal: Look for a red button on the motor

Overloads: Look where the power cord goes

Motor starters are always a good idea. They allow the motor to have an instantaneous overload for starting purposes.

There are two types now. One has thermals that are selected by the FLA (Full load amps) of the motor and the other that's electronically adjustable.

Generally they are used for 3 phase systems, but single phase is available.

Sometimes they contain an integral start/stop switch and a lockout (padlock in off position) mechanism.
