Do non-resident aliens need to pay NJ UI/HC/WD & SDI Tax?
    Hi everyone,

I'm an international student (F-1 visa) who recently did an internship over the summer in NJ. The company I worked for automatically withheld NJ UI/HC/WD and NJ SDI tax as per company policy. As an international, I am exempt from Social Security Tax, Medicare tax, etc. Do I need to pay this, or can I get it refunded?

Thanks so much for your help! Any advice would be appreciated and I'd be happyto supply any more info needed.

On F1 you are exempt from residency for 5-years. You must file non-resident tax return Form 1040NR or 1040NR-EZ and Form 8843.

Your income is not subject to FICA taxes but you must pay federal and state income taxes. On your income you will get deduction based on tax treaty between the U.S. and your country.

Sorry, but if you worked in New Jersey, you ARE subject to NJ UI/HC/WD and NJ SDI tax.
