I am a NEW Honda fan! I just bought a 92 Accord 2.2L (Non VTEC) which I absolutely LOVE! Anyway, I took a trip from Portland, OR to Roseburg, OR (Aprox 190 mi.) When I got about 20 - 30 mi. away and got off the freeway the oil light came on steady and then was blinking (rithymically) when I took off. After I shut the car off for an hr or so, the light did not return. Once I started driving though, it came back on and started blinking. When I got back to Portland the next day It did it again and sometimes would go off when rpms were raised, but now it just steadily blinks, but only comes on after freeway driving. The car is running perfect, but Idle does slightly drop when light comes on (Aprox 100 - 200 rpms). Also there is oil in the air filter and tube (K&N - fresh air intake). Could this be blow by from bad pcv and would that cause my underlying problem? Or could this be a bad oil psi switch or worse... oil pump? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance

Is there any blue smoke out of the exhaust? Oil pressure senders on Honda's are a constant issue. And there could be an issue with the pcv system as well as the possibility of internal oil leakage.

Thanks tech2480 for getting back to me. I haven't noticed any blue smoke. Can blow through pcv valve pretty good both directions and air intake tube has small pool at air filter. I'm just wondering if bad blow by could trick the sensor? Either way, the parts are under $10.00 PC, so... The only diff. in running condition is 100 - 200 rpm drop when oil light is on, but still runs perfect and still very responsive and quiet, no tapping or knocking. I just want to make sure I take as good care of this car as possible. Thanks again.

I would replace the sender and see if that fixes the oil light concern. As well as the PCV valve because who knows when the last time that was replaced.

Then just keep an eye on the air filter and tube assemblies.

Another thing I thought as far as the oil light is concerned... when was the last time you changed the oil? What weight oil did you use and is it the correct/new filter?

The guy who I git the car from w/i the last week or so is an ase certified mechanic (diesel) & he changed the oil about 2k mi. ago & I haven't checked the filter yet. He used 5/30 high mileage & said w/almost 270k on it I should switch to 10/30 HM & I was going to buy a K&N oil filter to put on it when I do the next LOF, but what do you think? Also, could that oil light cause the ecm to store a code? I have heard that the oil psi switch is a common fail part for hondas though. The guy I got the car from also put an external fuel psi regulator on it to (what he says will) give the car more HP if adjusted right, is that so? Do you have any recommendations for increasing HP safely and very cheaply?

I would always stay with what the manufacture suggests to use as far as fluids are concerned. But I wouldn't be against using the high mileage stuff because it has different detergents and additives in it. And as far as increasing the power, DON'T!! Not on a engine with 270k on it!! Just be glad that it is still performing as well as it is with that kind of mileage on it!

The oil sender is a very common problem on Honda's as I stated before.

Filter wise, the more you spend the better. Something like NAPA Gold grade should do just fine.

The oil pressure shouldn't pop a code but I'd have to double check as far as your year, make, and model are concerned.

The light hasn't been on the last couple days at all, I will probably replace the sensor and pcv valve this weekend. I started thinking after talking with people that the car would most likely be running kind of bad if it actually had an oil psi prob. This car runs perfect other than the almost unnoticeable rpm drop while light was on. So, I'll probably just use 5/30 HM on next LOF then. The shop I used to work at swore by Napa products, they're a Napa Auto Care Center. I only use Napa Gold anyway, but thought about trying K&N, I heard they made good oil filters, but Napa's the safe bet. I'll post again w/results. Thanks a lot!

It's been a little while. Sorry for the lateness of my update... financial problems, blah, blah, blah. Anyway, I haven't replaced the oil psi switch yet as I found the cause to all my problems (or so it seems). I noticed a day or 2 after my last reply that the car felt like it had a slight misfire, so I decided to check the spark plugs and do a resistance test on the wires. Upon removing plug boot from spark plug tube, about a tblspn or 2 of oil poured out of boot. I removed the plugs and found plug tubes 1, 2 & 4 were full of oil and plugs were soaked and fouled. I replaced plugs and valve cover gasket and upper tube seals. I also found what looked like o rings or gasket squished into all 4 plug tubes at the bottom, but found out the entire rocker arm assembly has to come off to replace them, and "they" are the head gasket material, but not leaking. This repair seems to have fixed my problem. It's been almost a week now and still no oil in the plug tubes. Also, of course, the misfire is gone and my power is back. Also, I turned the external fuel psi regulator all the way down for a few days. She seemed to run fine, just slightly decreased mpg, so I turned it back up to 20 psi where it was when I got it and all is good. I am going to replace the pcv valve too though. It is bad and needs replaced anyway. Thanks for your help and time, I really do appreciate it.
