    Socks? :D

Or most likely it's water damage or moisture trapped some place. You need to put your Sherlock Holmes hat on and investigate.

Tell us about your house starting with its age.

When I had this problem, the tub drain was leaking. I went in through the access panel in my back stair way and the wood was soaked. The walls and floors looked fine, but the wood was molding. I had to replace the plumbing parts and apply a 10-1 bleach solution to the wood several times before the smell went away. I hope this isn't what's going on with you, but a moldy smell usually means there's a leak somewhere.
