Hello, I am new to this maybe someone k=can lead me in the right direction. I need help with my son's identity. When he was born is last name was my maiden last name. His birth record said it and is social security was processed while I was in the hospital. When I got out I had a change of heart and switched his last name ti his fathers last name. The Birth Certificate was corrected but social security told me at the time it was not necessary to change it they will relate back to each other. Well now 16 years later and My son cannot get a Govt ID because of this what do I do??

What is the SSA saying? What type of Government ID? It may be necessary to go to a court to establish his legal identity.

Govt ID means and state issue Id so he can get a job. How would I get into the court and change it?

Does he really need such an ID? With his birth certificate you can get a passport which should serve as sufficient ID for getting a job. Does he have a driver's license? That should also be enough.

Have you asked the state why they won't issue an ID?

As for going to the courts, I would try to wait for that as a last resort. But if so, you go to your local Family Court and ask.

Why not just get the Government ID in his legal name?

Yes you need a stat issue ID to get a job. Let me read more into the I-9 Form maybe I could use some other type of identification.

What about when he files his income tax and his paychecks and social security say two different last names?

So go to the SSA and get them to correct his record.

I worked for years under my maiden name. I still do. I then got married and that is my legal name. My SS number is the same under both names, of course. I file an income tax return in my MARRIED name and attach proof of income in my MAIDEN name. The SS numbers match and that is all IRS cares about.
