I have a 15HP OHV Briggs engine on a Craftsman Lawn Tractor that was purchased in 1994. Recently the rocker arm stud backed out on the exhaust valve, I assume from years of vibration. I removed both studs and put loc-tite on them and reinstalled. My concern is that the rocker arms are VERY loose when the valves are closed. Is this normal? The intake rocker arm was loose prior to removal, but since the exhaust one was backed out, I have no reference point. There is a minimum of 1/8 inch space between the valve tip and rocker arm when the valve is closed.

It runs smoothly, but I didn't want to put it back into use until I'm sure this is OK.

They shouldn't be loose...

Thank you for the info. All they needed was a little adjustment. It runs better than ever now.

However I can't seem to keep the rockers in adjustment. The info provided is for a newer model. The hex headed fulcrum has a set screw that keeps them from backing off. Afer an hour of running the exhaust was way off again.

What would be the proper procedure for adjusting this type of rocker?

Hmm, take them off and blow them off (not while on the engine of course) with some carb cleaner and get them dry, and then install them with some locktight (blue should do) let it dry for a day or so (cover the front up to insure nothing gets in) and lube the rockers up and install the cover and see then.
