Cable Modem / IP settings problem
Hello everyone. Perhaps someone wouldn't mind assisting me. My problem is that my internet has quit working on my computer. It worked fine until I unplugged the ethernet cable from it and then after that it was always "acquiring network address" then it says "Limited or no connectivity" My modem is fully functional from what I can tell. Line 1 is solid green, Data flashing green, PC solid green, power solid green and cable solid green. I spoke with my ISP tech support and they had no answer for it. He ended up speaking with his supervisor and they had to forward my problem to higher tech support and get back with me when they knew what was happening. From what I could see, my DNS was nonexistent. I did the whole cmd>ipconfig /release >ipconfig /renew -- which, then, gives me an error saying it had timed out and couldn't connect. I appreciate your time and look forward to your response.

When you unplug your ethernet from the cablemodem you loose your IP and need to renew your DHCP lease. Something could be preventing you from getting a DHCP. These are some options:

    - Check the cable (silly but sometimes it could be a cause)... try a new cable if you can
    - Check your windows for any changes (i.e. was a firewall installed on it that prevents DHCP, disable and see what happens if so)
    - Try a different PC/Laptop on that same connection if you can. Does it behave the same way?
    - Why did you disconnect your ethernet cable? Did you rebuild your machine? Did you change the NIC in the machine? Sometimes your cablemodem provider will lock your MAC address in their cable modem so if you put a new NIC in the PC (or basically change the MAC address) then you no longer can connect.
    - What type of cable modem do you have (make/model) and what are the specs on your PC? Those might give us more clues

    - I'll try a new cable when I get home.
    - no firewall was installed, I disabled the windows firewall that is built in. I disabled my virus protection completely.
    - I will try my other desktop when I get home.
    - I disconnected it originally because it was connected with a USB cable.. which gave terrible service. Constant spikes of lag. The Ethernet cable was connected to the other computer and the USB was connected to the main computer. Both computers got internet perfectly fine, so I wanted to try the main computer with an ethernet cable instead of USB. The alternate computer quit working. The main one worked still. Then I tried to restart my computer to fix the alternate one and they both quit all together. Am I making any sense? Lol..

And wow, I appreciate all of your help ever so much. You're a champ.. all for free too! Wow.. great person

    You're welcome :)

So has your ISP asked you to restart your cable modem? What model/make is it?

Yeah, they had me cmd>ipconfig /release>ipconfig /renew. Didn't work, I got that error.. then they had me unplug the modem, plug it back in.. Turn my PC off, unplug it for about 2 minutes.. plug it back in, let it power up.. turn my PC back on.. no luck still. It's the Terayon TJ600 **I believe** that or one of the TJ700s, but I really think it's the 600.

    Try this:

    - Unplug the Ethernet connection and the USB connections from the back of the cable modem (i.e. completely remove the cables).
    - Power down both PC's
    - Shut down the Cablemodem and wait at least 60 seconds.

    - Now power up your cablemodem
    - Wait for the lights to stabilize
    - Plug ONLY your ethernet connection to the main PC (DO NOT plug your USB connection at all)
    - Power up the main PC that is now connected via Ethernet.

Tell me if that works for you.

Man, that sounds like it may have worked.. they've never told me to do that.. variants of it, but never that.. soI ge a call bright and early this morning from the ISP.. they came over and replaed it with a different model modem.. he said because I had my digital phone through my modem and then quit using it, it messed things up inside it.. sounds like a p.o.s. to me.. but I seriously appreciate all of your time and efforts. Much, much thanks!
