MFS-1040X(MFJ) to get RRC but how we explain RRC in 1040X?
    Dear Experts,

I filed MFS to get RRC (my spouse's ITIN disqualified last year). My tax software said I am qualified for $600 if I file MFS, so "STEP 1" seems to work.

But, my tax software put $600 on line 15 column A and -$600 on column B in Form 1040X, which means I eventually do not get any of RRC once we amend. If we do not amend, we get RRC but pay much more Tax. So it does not make sense.

In IRS website, they say we do not have to return Economy Stimulus Rebate "CHECK" last year, if one did MFS and later amended. But RRC seems that it must be put on line 15 since it is a "CREDIT" and not a "CHECK".

In Form 1040X, how we can explain and deal with RRC we received and can we leave line 15 blank as if we did not get RRC? I am so confused and need your help.

Thank you very much all the time.

Manually over-ride your tax software to blank out any mention of the RRC, then file the Form 1040X. Clearly state in the 'COMMENTS" section on page 2 of the Form 1040X that this is what you are doing.

Its not clear on what you are doing. If you are filing the 1040X to go from MFS to MFJ, and your software is putting $600 you already received on ling 15b, it is mistakenly removing it. You should make sure its on line 15a and 15c, as long as the MFJ status gives you the same RRC as MFS. If you get more RRC going MFJ, the increase goes on line 15b, and added to line 15a to get 15c. But what all your actiions that are occurring aren't clear.
