    Networking 2 old computers
I have 2 computers, both are Windows 2000, and both have USB hook ups. We have a game we would like play play versus each other. The computers do not have internet. They do not have Ethernet hook ups either. Is there any way we could hook them up with out being to pricy?

Installing low cost Ethernet adapters, such as a Netgear FA311 or others and connecting via a cross-over Ethernet cable is the simplest and most robust. Confirm Windows 2000 driver support when shopping as support for this older operating system is beginning to wane on newer adapters. Or, use standard Ethernet patch cables with a low cost switch (Netgear GS105 or others). With a switch, additional computers can be easily added if your buddies want to play too.

USB-to-Ethernet adapters are also available if there is a concern about opening the computer up to install a regular adapter. I consider these less robust than regular adapters and you may encounter issues with certain applications - older games that use IPX/SPX protocol come to mind. Ethernet is Ethernet and it shouldn't matter what protocol is being used, but I've encountered problems running protocols other than TCP/IP over non-traditional network hardware.

Scleros, you brought back some memories with that post... games running IPX/SPX. Wow. That goes back a ways.
