Break Lease for apartment in SC
Rented an apartment because my husband and I separated... had to get out quick. Several reasons I need to break the lease--money, bad neighbors, etc. I live in SC, what can I do?

I assume you signed a one year lease, right? You can tell the owner you plan to leave but in most states you owe monthly rent until they can find a new tenant. You also pay for advertising of the unit.

    Hello Josie:

I'm assuming you're NOT there. But, my advice isn't too much different whether you are or aren't there. Certainly, they're going to want their rent. If you offer them TWO months rent, either when you go in to break your lease, or when you call them on the phone because you've moved already, that might end it. You know, a bird in the hand sort of thing.

Or it might not. They are required to rent it as soon as possible to mitigate your damages, so that'll help. But, if it takes them six months to rent it, you'll be responsible for six months rent.
