Before purchasing a car in CA I had a mechanic check the car for me, even asking him to check the subframe(a problem with some z3 cars)and he reported back to me there were no problems. I agreed to purchase the car and asked the owner to take the car back and have a few things fixed. I was driving from Long Beach to Las Vegas and wanted the car in top condition. I asked again that the subframe be checked again and nothing was reported yo me. I flew to CA from PA to purchase the car. After purchasing the car I asked the owner if there is anything I need to know about and he informed me that the only other problem was the subframe but he thought I already knew this information. @ miles down the road the head gasket blew due to old gas(detenation in #1 and #4 cylinder). I made a deal with the mechanic to fix my car(head gasket) for the price of parts. The bill I got has labor on it, can I fight this?

Subframe problems were not found by the mechanic. Right ? And the owner told you there were problems after you gave him the money?? If not, why did you buy it if he told you there were. I don't understand.

In Ontario you can't buy a car unless it has a Roadworthy Cert by a licensed mechanic. If you don't see that, then you don't buy.

Problems were found by mechanic during inspection before purchasing but never told to me only the owner. I paid for the service and asked the mechanic specifically about the subframe(not once but twice). He took pics but never sent them to me. He told me they forgot to inform me. I was told by the owner after I purchased the car but I hold the mechanic responsible not the owner.

I'm not following. You "made a deal" with a mechanic for him to replace a head gasket without charging you anything for his labor? Why should he work for free?

You can try to ask the owner to pay for the labor or split the bill with you. What happened exactly with the head gasket? You say it "blew out" from old gas; was it leaking? How did you become aware that it blew out?

It appears that you have TWO mechanics you're complaining about - one in PA who didn't tell you about the problems with the frame, and one on the road who charged you labor for a head gasket.

You wonder if you should pay labor for replacing your head gasket. Yes, you should.

OR, if there's only ONE mechanic and you don't want to pay labor because you think he screwed you because he didn't tell you about the frame... I can't tell. But, if that's the case, why would you have him work on your car if you didn't trust him in the first place??

But, if your question is, the mechanic said he would fix the head gasket for only the cost of parts, because he felt bad about not telling you what you needed to know earlier, and then charged you labor anyway, NO, you don't have to pay..

But, you won't get your car, so you'll have to pay, and then sue him in small claims court for your money... Then you'll have to travel ALL the way back to PA from California, and you're not going to do that... So, the next time... Don't buy a car 3,000 miles from home.
