I have one female rabbit and one male rabbit to keep me happy, but I think their babies will would keep me happier.I want my rabbits to have babies, but every time they do have babies the babies die.First when the babies were born they were breathing and moving, but the next day they all died.I keep the mother and the babies in one cage and I put the father in another.I keep it warm enough for them, I always check them once in a while, and I give the mother a good amount of food and water.Is there anything I'm doing wrong?

So, do you give a damn about how happy your rabbits are? Do you know what having babies does to your female rabbit? Do you know that her life expectancy has been greatly reduced because of what you want?

Stop being so greedy and only thinking of yourself. Nature is trying to tell you something, that's why all the rabbits are dying.

Get your female spayed. It will prolong her life and make her a better and easy going rabbit.

If you don't know how to breed, you shouldn't, that's a fact.

I'm glad that makes YOU happy, because if they could talk they would have a few things to say how happy this is making them! Do you know how those brand new little babies had to suffer to make you "happier." Really?

Okay, I have calmed down Bree-Anna. I have read a few of your other posts. I'm sorry I was so hard on you, but you really have to learn how to take care of your rabbits. I'm sure Altenweg would be very happy to give you more information, so that you can give them the care that they need. She really does know what she is talking about when it comes to rabbits.

We aren't mean people here, and you can talk to us. Some people have tried to help you on your other threads. I will answer your other questions there okay? Just please, don't breed your rabbits anyone okay? Talk to Alty, and she'll give you some advice. You are young, and you don't have the knowledge yet on how to care for your bunnies.

Here is some helpful information I forgot to add that makes me sound less bad.
At first I thought they were both males because about a year passed and there were no babies so how was I supposed to know?When they had their first babies I found them dead in the cage.There were nine of them but I buried them and I practically spent the whole night praying for my rabbits.It wasn't until about 6 months they had there other babies.It was late so I was going to take them to the vet the next day so I can find out if they were healthy not like the other ones.Yesterday morning I found them babies dead.

Sweetie, you really do have to get them fixed. It's not good for rabbits to have litter upon litter of babies. Also, a female rabbit that isn't spayed has a average life expectancy of 3 years, whereas a spayed female can live up to 12 years. That's a big gap!

Male rabbits are friendlier when neutered, also easier to train.

It really is the best thing you can do for them.

I'm sorry I was so harsh with you.

I have 4 rabbits, all fixed and all very happy healthy bunnys.

Love the ones you have, don't try to add more to the mix. Okay?

You aren't bad, you just haven't got the knowledge you need to have. Alty will help you with that as I said. I'm sorry the babies died before you could take them to the vet. This is why you need some info, so that this doesn't accidentally happen again. There are millions of bunnies in shelters, and they are running out of room. If you love rabbits, then you need to learn all you need to know, and then adopt one or two who don't have a homes, but only after you know all you need to know.

Helpful info and I'm glad you are getting them fixed... by the way, when you are trying to figure out what sex they are... the males have dangly bits underneath them... the females don't :p
Years ago my mums friend gave me a 'female' rabbit then I wondered what the two growths were between his legs (I was only about 7 years old)

With your love of bunnies why not put it to great use. First do as you stated and get your pair fixed.
You should use the love you have of bunnies to spend time reading up on just having a bunnie as a pet.
Enjoy your bunnies as Pets Learn all you can by reading about the health and behavior and diet and housing etc. This way you can help others with their pets.
Something else that would be really helpful for you and your rabbits is to sign up at your local Shelter or Humane Society or rescue to help out. Mind you this involves more than just playing with bunnies but it will give you lots of experience. It will also help you see just what the lady above is talking about when she shares the numbers of bunnies put to sleep.
I have volunteered for years as a shelter worker and believe me they put to sleep MANY bunnies because people like you breed them Just because they have a male and female. They then sell or give them away and they go to homes who do the same as you and there are yet more unwanted and well sorry but I know for a fact the shelter where I live puts to sleep at least 20 bunnies a week. That adds up to a lot of bunnies.
Do you really want to add to that?
If in fact you later decide to breed well I hope that it is a lot later and it is after you have learned all you can about owning a bunny and know all you can about diet and behavior and care in general. There is just way more to breeding a animal than having two animals who are male and female.
Please put the love of bunnies to good use. So many unwanted ones could use another person to help them

Most people don't know a lot about bunnies, including the pet stores that sell them. It's sad, and many of the store bought bunnies end up in shelters because they are so misunderstood.

Rabbits are very social animals, love to be with their own kind. They tolerate human beings because we've forced them to accept us.

Spaying and neutering is a must. If the rabbits that end up in the shelters had been fixed, chances are that they would have remained with the people who purchased them. Behavior changes drastically when a rabbit is spayed or neutered.

My bunny Cotton was a pet store purchase (my one and only, the rest are rescues). The day that he went in to the vet for a pre exam before getting him neutered, I took him to the pet store where we adopted him to pick up a few treats etc.

The pet store people all swooned, gave him pets, adored him. I mentioned that I was picking up some treats for him because he was going under the knife the following day. They were all shocked, they didn't know you could neuter a rabbits.

These are the people selling rabbits left right and center to people who buy them because they are adorable, but have no clue what to do after they get the bunny.

It's sad.

Yes, my last bunny was bought from a pet store and they didn't ask me a single thing about rabbits... I could have been buying him to put in a stew and they wouldn't have cared as long as they got their money.
I just got my last bunny from the shelter and they screened me to see if I was a suitable bunny owner.
Thanks to Alty I have now had 2 of my 3 bunnies fixed.
They are feeling much better by the way :)
Diego doesn't even know anything has happened and Dora... well... she is being a bit of a pain but putting up with it :)
Jack however, he's a bit on the old side now I think, I wouldn't want to risk it, plus he lives at my mums because he has been there for the last 8 years and I don't want to move him. He's a strange one anyway, he only likes people! And my mum loves him so he is in safe hands.

I can't even begin to say how happy and proud (yes proud) I am that you got Dora and Diego fixed. They may be a bit unhappy now, but I know that because of this they will live longer and happier lives.

As for Jack, well, he's older and I have to agree that putting him through an operation at this stage in his life isn't a good idea.

Thumper (our little nibbler) was estimated to be around 4 years old when we adopted him, so he would be around 6 now. He was neutered his second stay at the shelter. You know the story, I've told it many times, so I won't bore you with it again, but, I have to say that all the stuff they warned us about with him, well, it's simply not an issue. He is such a love, such a cuddle bunny, such a little stinker! ;)

I think part of it was not knowing how to handle him, the other part was because he wasn't fixed. He really is a love.

I have him and Dora in the same room but on opposite sides...
He can smell her and is running up and down the wire all the time... then he makes it to the end where the food is, stops for a nibble then runs back again. I think I need to put some toys there so he stops running!
Little beggar keeps throwing all his hay out of his bed too, he's going to be a mischeivious little one!

He sounds like my type of bunny, I love the mischievous ones. :)

Have you tried a toilet paper roll filled with timothy hay? It releives stress and keeps them entertained. The toilet paper roll is not at all harmful to them so it's okay for them to eat. Also the telephone books. I know I already mentioned that, but they really love it and it might make him stop throwing his hay around.

I will try to get my hands on a telephone book, we only just moved house so we've just got the one here :)

Yep, got a toilet roll in there, I discovered a new cheap toy too today!

I had a cardboard box and I cut a big square off it and then slashed the top layer of cardboard with a pair of scissors, kind of hard to explain but it looks like scratch marks on the flat cardboard...
Anyway, I put it in their enclosures and they went nuts! Within a few minutes all the lines I had made had been ripped off in strips.
Just thought I'd share because I was proud that I had made something useful lol :D
