    Ceiling Fan switch
The switch chain broke off and I replaced the brokenswitch with a different switch that I saved from an old fan that was thrown away. The broken (old) switch had four wires (L - black... 1 - orange... 2 - purple... 3 - yellow). The new/ replacement has only 3 wires. I foolishly failed to mark the connections and replaced the broken four wire switch with the three wire switch. The light and fan chains still work independently as they did in the past. Also the wall switch shuts everything off as in the past. The only difference is the fan now has only 2 speeds; it used to have 3 speeds. I don't care about the missing speed but want to know if the wiring is safe.

It may damage the fan, it is possible if the motor is wired wrong it can overheat. Worst case scenario it goes up in smoke.

    What make is the fan?

First of all the new replacement switch NEEDS to have the same number of wires as the old switch. Second of all make sure black is wired to L.
