What are the best garden plants for central valley California

Isn't the weather perfect in Central Cal? I do great with Geraniums, Palms, Ferns, Grasses, lavender, Bird of paradise, roses, lemon, lime, orange, kumquat etc and I'm in the Sac area. The only thing I have real trouble with is Poppy (ha ha Californias flower)
