HI I live in Canada, province of quebec, so we have very high and very low temperature. I need to add an extnesion on the front and rear of my barn so I can store machinery and prevent the snow and water from the rain to build up and enter the barn in winter and spring when snow melts. Wath is the best way to install my wood post into the ground? Do I simply dig a hole and backfill with the dirt that I have excavated? Do I poor concrete or use a sonotube to poor concrete in? Some people say I can use all ready mad econcrete block and simply use a metal bracket to secure my post and the concrete block will distribute the weight. This extension will carry lots of snow during winter!

If the environment it that rough. I would use a sonotube and dig below freezing. Lift the sono tube 8" off of excavated area to the pour runs out the bottom of the tube and also creates a footer at the same time. 24"x24'x8" thick should make a good pad. Use rebar in tube pour. Set tube above finish grade line. In that fresh pour use a 1/2 stubbed out rebar for a "pin" to pin post to top of concrete. Drill the hole center of post and set on top of the concrete. This will stop the 'kicker" part of the post. Coat bar and bottom of post with foundation coating.

Now you have a footer and concrete round pier from below freeze to above grade and pin in pier top to set post and attach.

Of course check the local codes. Those tube aren't cheap would laid block pier be cheaper? It is here.
