I have looked all over the forum for similar topics and have found some. I took apart the faucet assembly but have come across a type of cartridge which I am not sure what to do with. How do you remove this type of cartridge from the pipe? I am 90% sure that all I need to do is throw a new cartridge in and I will have hot water again. Thank you for your help.

Just got the copper stopper out, took everything I had to pull it out. I then tried to remove the cartridge but all that moved was the silver piece that controls the flow, everything else is ceased. I'm off to home depot to see if they can help!

You should just need to shut off the water supply, pull the copper clip up and out and then remove the cartridge. If the cartridge is hard to remove then you may need to purchase a moen cartridge puller from home depot... see picture below.

It is a good idea to use a little silicone grease at the orings on the new cartridge... ;)

Mark's correct! For those stubborn cartridges Moen makes a cartridge puller, (see image). You can pick one up at most plumbing supply stores. Good luck, Tom

YUP! You can purchase the handle puller... see picture... or you could also attach the handle back on and give this a good yank!

If a good yank doesn't work then get the puller.. that will get it out quickly!

Thank you all for your speedy responses! I just took the cartridge out after using a series of levers. 30 years of calcium buildup on the cartridge has made it useless. I am heading out after dinner to get a new cartridge and shower set. I will let you know how if it fixes the problem =)

When you get your new cartridge, before installing the cartridge turn on the water for a few seconds to flush out any debris left inside the valve and make sure to use some silicone grease as Mark have suggested, good luck.

Sooo I got a whole new shower assembly, put everything back together and now I have no hot water in my shower at all!

You know I got to ask here... did you FLUSH the lines when you had the cartridge out? Here, you cover the face of the valve with a towel and then have someone turn the water on for a few short bursts and then check to see if anything showed up in the towel. Would be nice if you could direct the water into the tub abit and see if you can feel the water getting warmer... confirms hot water present to valve... but be careful not to get burned here.

If you did that, then the next logical step should be to go to the nearest hot water shutoff in the line and see if that got clogged somehow.

One other thing to try for curiosity sake would be to remove the cartridge and rotate it 180 degrees... then reinstall... if you get hot water then you have a bad cartridge! It happens sometimes.

I did flush the lines when I removed the old cartridge. Quite a bit of black stuff came out with the water. I now have twice as much flow coming through the tap. I will try rotating the cartridge 180 degrees to see if that changes anything.

It sure will! Rotating the cartridge 180 degrees will reverse the flow so that hot water will come out on the cold side. It won't give you better flow. Regards, Tom

All I had to do was flip the cartridge 180 degrees! The fools that built my house (it is 30 years old) didn't run the piping up through the wall but instead cheaped out and now I have to find a new head/hose/faucet set which is proving to be difficult.
