    Hi
If you want Literal interpretation then
It means that a human being doesn't live only with bread.
What they wanted to say that human need other things different from food and money like dignity, happiness and love

    Thank you.

I do understand the difference between "translation" and "transliteration"...

So for American English, would this, then, be the same?:

"Man (humans) cannot live on bread (food that one eats) alone"

    ?

I recognize the difficulty. Can you put into American English how you would say what is printed in a different way than you said?

Yes it's the same in American english as you said.
I don't know how to say it in another way but I'll try ( bread is not the only thing that a man or human lives on )
Looked at the arabic words from the right to the left :
The first one means not only
    The second means on bread
    The third means alone
    The forth means lives
The fifth means man or human
I hope that I've helped you
