Negative taxable income (Line 14 of 1040NR-EZ)
    Hi,

I am an F-1 student and I earned 8611$ in 2008. I am filing my taxes with 1040NR-EZ and as I am from India, my itemized deductions (line 11) is 5350. So, the line 12 will be 8611 minus 5350 = 3261. This amount is less than 3500 (the exemption reduction as per page 6). This will make the number in line 14 negative (line 13-line 12 => 3261-3500). Hence, my question is:

    1. Should I put a negative sign in front of the 239$ in Line 14 or leave it as zero?
    2. Should I calculate the tax (from tax table) as zero or ignore the negative sign and look up the tax for 239$ (which will be $24)?

Please advice and any response is really appreciated.

    Thanks,
    K

Write (239) or write 0. Your tax is 0.
