We have an older but well built 1970 house in South Florida, CBS construction. Due to some heavy rains, we found that there was a leak into my daughter's bedroom, and the carpet, padding, and the tack board under the padding was soaked, and there was evidence of moldy black substance on the baseboards. We had a trench dug around the outside of her room and noticed that there were some cracks in the foundation which water seeped through in order to get into the house.

Is it possible to get mold in the walls of a cinder block home, especially one of the walls that outlines the house, not an interior wall? We cleaned the area with bleach, scrubbed it, dried it out, but I'm wondering whether to get any mold testing done. I've heard that it is impossible for mold to grow inside the cinder block wall, and that if there was mold we would see it on the interior.

As a mason and a re hap contractor I have never see mold "inside" a block wall. The salt content in all masonry and concrete seems to keep it at bay, Only when its exposed to at its surface to open air allows it to form.

The mold scare is not what its cracked up to be to begin with. Do some research on it. I been doing this for 30 years and of all the contractors I know only one person in 30 years got sick from it.

Do you realize how much molds in basement for the past 50 years and working around it like we do daily as times.

Bleach kills it and its dead end of mold.

I agree with 21 but no longer rely on bleach as a mold killer. It does appear to kill mold but mostly the surface you see. Mold is like a plant and actually send roots into porous surfaces and bleach burns off the plant but not always the root. A good mildewcide is a better solution for inside most homes. I have been using this stuff Jomax Mildewcide Concentrate, 1 Gal # 60101 by Zinsser Company but you actually have to add some bleach to it. Maybe I am just a sucker for advertising.

I love it a sucker for advertising!! Aren't we all! Adding bleach does make one wonder if that's what really doing the job??

Its like buying different brands of bleach and on the side of each bottles content is the same ingredients and amounts in %.

But I do the same thing on other products become a sucker for advertising.
