What's the best way to paint over a powder coat finish on metal
I have a set of tables (coffee, end and sofa) that no longer match my décor. They are metal with a powder coat finish. I like the shape and scale and want to make them a little more rustic by wrapping some areas with jute cording. However, I am unsure of the necessary steps I will need to take to paint over the finish and have it stick. Is sanding prior to priming going to be enough? Should I use something to remove the slick surface? Would a varnish/paint remover help or make it worse. Any ideas would be most welcome.

You don't have to remove the old powder coat but do sand any bare or chipped spots. Wipe down with liquid sander or steel wool and then wipe with laquer thinner and a tack cloth. Most good quality spray paints like Rust-oleum should be fine but always test in a hidden area to make sure the new paint won't lift or wrinkle the old finish

Thanks for your response! The finish is not chipped or bare in any spots so I will give the steel wool and laquer thinner a try.
