Every time our guest bathrooms' toilet is flushed, when the tank starts to fill back up the pipes start humming, and Loud. We have to turn on the sink faucet to make the humming stop in order to relieve the pressure. I don't know what is causing it, it just started one day and now it won't quit.
Should I do something with the valve underneath the toilet?
I hope someone can help.

I have the one on the right with the red ball.

What you hear is the washer vibrating against the ballcock seat. The reason it stops when you turn the water on is that you have lowered the pressure by opening a valve. You can go at this two ways. (1) you can lower the pressure by turning the angle stop located below the tank until the noise stops or, (2) you can shut off the stop and remove the three screws on top and cup your hand over the top and just crack the stop enough to flush out any trash that may be in there. After you do that pull the washer out of its holder and flip it over in its holder and reinstall the top and float. One of the two should do the trick. If not click on back. Good luck, Tom

Or you could replace the fill valve with the one on the left. If you decide to do this, please let us know and we will let you know how. (sorry speed, I know you hate when I tell people to replace instead of repair< lol) I just love them fluidmasters.

No prob Dad! FluidMasters don't do too well in my area. Our water swells the orface in the seal shut and the tank won't fill. Youkeep on calling them likke you see them. Have a good one, Tom

Thanks speedball. I agree its weird how some products work well in certain areas and not so well in others. Minerals in water can play havvoc on certain parts. My area has had great luck with the fluids, but I have noticed problems with them in the rural areas that are on separate wells. Do you suggest using a different fill vavle for these areas. I have also noticed that some flapper valves warp in these areas(areas that don't do well with the fluidmaster). Is it all about water quality. I always blamed it on the homeowner using cleaning chemical and the like in there toilet tanks.

Our flappers have a short life also. If I have a FluidMaster call I usually simply replace the seal but if I have a choice in replacing the ballcock I go with the float ball type. Regards, Tom

Thanks guys, I'll try this and let you know. What I did discover today was that after I flush the toilet and allow the tank to fill up, then when the humming starts, I can just barely lift the "ball float" and it will stop. Is this what your answers are explaining in order to correct?

Yes that's what the problem is, you can proceed with Tom's advice or if you want to change the fill valve I would suggest to go with Lee's (Mygirlsdad) suggestion Fluidmaster 400 are easy to handle, good luck,
