    Checks bounced

I was sent 2 cashiers checks for work that I did. I cashed the checks at my bank and they were returned. What happens to me if I do not pay the bank back?

    Hello cj:

You'll be sued, and you might be charged with a criminal offense.

You DO know that you were scammed, don't you?? Maybe not, because you insist the money came from work you did... But, all you did was send REAL money back to the scammers who sent you PHONY money, and left you holding the bag.

First its not a good idea to piggyback your question on someone else's. Especially when it has nothing to do with the OP. This can lead to confusion. You should start a new thread. So I've moved your question to its own thread.

It certainly sounds like you fell for a variation of the wellknown Nigerian scam.

Can you describe what "work" you did and how you came about doing it?

But the bottomline is if you presented false checks to a bank, if you don't repay they can prosecute you for passing bad paper (forged checks).

Even if the checks were "cashier checks" they were obviously fake checks as they probably came from another country. You will have to pay the bank back whatever money you got when you cashed the checks. I'm sorry, but I agree with Excon and Scott that you were scammed. This is happening more and more now that times are tough and these vultures come out of the woodwork after people just trying to make ends meet. You probably wired the money out of the country to someone and it's too late now to do anything or even go to the police as that person probably does not exist under that name.

Don't understand how this happened unless it was a money laundry scheme or something similar.

What are the details of the work you did?

Well of course to the bank, you have to pay it back or normally they will press criminal charges.

Beyond that you can sue the business that paid you, ( funny business paying in cashiers checks)

Why not tell us the company you were working for and the work you were doing, to help others learn from this

I doubt if the OP will come back. Probably too embarrassed to admit he was scammed.
