I was taking a shower in our upstairs shower and my wife said we had a water leak below in the kitchen. I shut off the water and started looking for the leak. We had the shower completely redone 5 months ago with all new tile, fixtures, copper pipr etc. After looking in the shower I discovered the grout below the shower doors has a large gap. It runs almost the entire length of the shower. You can look inside the gap with a flashlight and see how thje grout has separated from the top edge of the tile. My question is why did this happen. Movement of the house? If it is repaired ill it happen again?

What is the best way to repair the damage??

Even with missing grout, the shower pan should hold water. This should not happen with just built shower. Did you hot mop shower base? Can you post a photo of your shower?

Your best bet now is to call the contractor who rebuilt the shower. He'll know exactly what's wrong.

A picture would really help in this one. The pan should hold water no matter what. The door usually sits on the curb above the pan and might allow water into the walls and sub floor. Try getting 4 buckets of water from another source and then dump them into the pan without splashing, one a minute for 4 minutes. Does this cause a leak below?

Contractor that did the work came to inspect the shower. I was told that they were going to take out the tile on the raised part where the shower door is. They were going to redo that part apply new tile, regrout and he said it would not leak anymore.

Anno: make sure they water-seal the curb properly. I cannot imagine them re-doing only small part of shower pan. Pan is one continuous sealed pan and any repair to it are extremely difficult to do.

When new shower door is being installed, make sure they do not drill to the curb to install door frame. If door frame is present, than silicone it and let dry for 72 hours.

Take photos during demo, repair and new tile installation. Ask lots of questions.
