I purchased a car at a dealership in Va. I do not have a valid Va driver's license;however, I do have a valid Tx drivers license When I purchased the vehicle I didn't even have a physical license on hand, just my license number. When the 30 day tags expired I was informed that the Va DMV would not issue hard plates for my vehicle because of unpaid court fines and tickets that caused my driving privileges to be suspended. My driving privileges had been suspended in Va since 2005. The VP of the company that I purchased my car from is telling me that I cannot register my car in any other state but Va and that I cannot even take the car to any other state as per the terms of my contract. I read through the contract thoroughly and did not see anything that said that. My driver's license is still in good standing in Tx though( I am prior military and never switched my license). Can I get my vehicle registered in Tx? Do I need the title( the finance company has it and is not willing to give me a duplicate). Does anyone know the steps needed to do this?

You are misinformed. You can only have a drivers license issued from ONE state at a time. Your Texas license is NOT valid in Va. After 30 days.

So, the way to get your car registered, is to clear up the problems you have with Va.

Clear up your Virginia ticket problem and get your license back in Virginia. The Texas license will soon expire anyway I'm sure and having a military license and no longer in the military is not a smart thing to do these days.

OK, let me be a little more clear.

a) I am licensed in Texas. Active duty members are not required to be licensed in the state that they are stationed in. I was never in the US long enough to get a Va license if I wanted to. Which I do not. I travel back and forth between Tx and Va. My husband is active duty stationed in Va.

b) I have only had one license. A Tx license. I have never had a Va license.

The answer is still to clear up your VA record. The dealership can't turn the car over to you until its registered and you can't register it until you clear up your record.

I have the car. It is registered. Va DMV just won't turn over hard plates. I need to know if I can get the registration switched to Texas.

I will agree, first if you have a lot of unpaid tickets and fines, they will not be too far from having your Texas license suspended soon.

So you need to take care of those to get your car licensed

Perhaps, I am not up on the service issue, since I know many keep the plates from their home states.

Actually I have first hand experience with this. Several years ago my driver's license stolen. This was before NYS had photo licenses. The person who stole the license presented it when pulled over for speeding violations in NJ and VA on the same day. I didn't find this out until I received failure to appear summons. While I was able to go to court in NJ to prove it wasn't me, I wasn't going to travel all the way to VA. They refused to accept my proofs and sent me notice that my license was suspended in VA.

You can have the car registered in TX only if it passes inspection at a state-authorized facility, and you can't do that in VA. You will also need the title to register the car. See:

Of course. From their point of view - why would anyone register a car in TX if the car is not physically in TX? Remember most (all?) states have rules that say if you have a car in state you have 30 days or so to heve it registered in that state. So if in fact you are living in VA (which is not at all clear from the previous posts) then you're going to have to have it registered in VA soner or later.
