Friend caught taking coupons out of Sunday papers
My friend was caught taking some coupons out of some sundays papers. She was left go with a warning. This happened in a grocery store and she was wondering how long her name(file) will be in there computer system? She didn't realize she was doing an ything wrong and she feels really terrible. She's really nervous!

Let go with a warning by whom? The police? Was the warning written or verbal?

From the security at the store.

    Verbal warning.

Your firend won't have a criminal record, but the store security may keep a record. It could remain in their system forever.

However, as long as she doesn't repeat any illegal activity, there shouldn't be a problem.

Here's a better plan... tell her to stop stealing stuff. That way she can go anywhere she wants. :)

I was bothered by this when I first saw it, but I decided to let it pass, but it gnawed at me so I decided to say something.

When someone purchases a newspaper, they expect that paper to be intact. To include all the sections normally included. This is what they pay for. So, for anyone to think that taking anything out of the paper was not wrong, makes me wonder. Now maybe someone takes the automotive section out. Now maybe the person buying the paper isn't looking for a new car so doesn't miss it. But if they are looking to buy a car, they would now have to go back to the store, wasting time and gas, to get the section they need. Maybe the person buying the paper your friend stole the coupon from would have used that coupon, so your friend, in effect stole from them!

If you friend really thought she wasn't doing anything wrong, its because she didn't think period.

And by the way... everyone knows 'your friend' is you. Whenever there is a legal issue, its always "my friend".

The worst person in the world is "my friend" and the worst place to be is "standing on a corner, minding my own business".

You're right. My friend is the excon - not me.

I prefer to give the benenfit of the doubt here. True, that often a poster refers to a friend instead of admitting they made the mistake. Since posting is pretty anonymous I don't understand why one would do this. Usually however, such people trip themselves up somehow.

But there are many times that someone does post for a friend. Maybe the friend doesn't have access to a computer or isn't comfortable using one. Maybe they don't want to join this site but know someone who is a member. Maybe it is a friend and they confide in their friend and the friend says I use this site where you can find great answers, let me find the info for you.

So I don't automatically assume that the poster is not asking for a friend but for themselves.

I was actually basing it off the statements "my friend is never going back there" and "my friend feels terrible". But you're right - I made a blanket statement for a quick laugh.

Sorry to the poster if I incorrectly assumed that your friend was actually you. If it was you, please do not feel that you are being judged or anyone cares what you did here more than to give you the best and most complete advice we can. If it was your friend, I suggest she reads the other 20 or so posts below this one about theft and jail time. I know they were just coupons, but the were not hers to take and the law does not really care if it was $2 or $200. Granted... it might be more lenient because of what it was... but that's not really something to gamble on.

Thatsok, my friend understands. There is ask lawyers on line that could answer her questions, even though she wasn't charged with anything. She just got a warning.I think she feel better if her name was not in there computer system. She is worried how long it could be in there. She jumps every time the phone rings. She lives with her mother and she's disabled and she also deals with anxiety disorders like OCD and GAD( Obsessive Compulsive disorder and GeneralizedAnxiery Disorder). All she wanted was some coupons to use towards makeup. She regrets what she did and she wows to keep her nose clean and hands cleans.I'm going to buy her coupons off of eBay for the coupons she wants, so she can do it the legal way and not the easy way out. She likes to collect skin samples and make up samples and likes to buy make up occasionally. She just thinks before she acts. I guess it's the compulsions. But she said she will never do that again and get the coupons off line, which I'm glad to oblige. She just wishes her name was not in there computer system in that grocery store. She really is a good person and she deeply regrets what she did and she did not realize she was not doing anything wrong.

Given the circumstances I doubt if the store will do anything further, but her name will remain in their security records, but no place else.

Doesn't matter if she doesn't do anything else illegal.

If she would move out of state and she can just tell them to take her name out and she won't be back in the area in the unforseeable future.

This is not a record that will show up anywhere other then the grocery store, what's the big deal?

She did the crime, she got off easy, just let it rest and tell her to make sure to keep her nose clean in the future.
