There is nothing wrong with issuing your concerns to the performing dentist. In which case, they would be happy to allay your fears on all of these issues regarding your son. They are the professionals. They wouldn't use the gas if it wasn't safe, and preferrable over the conventional freezing method because of his young age mom and no it won't hurt him to have the root canal, but you yourself could transfer a fear to him if he even feels that you are scared and worried. So put on a happy face and make him happy to go the dentist.

Talk to your dentist, but before you do, put a list together of all the points you want to discuss with him regarding your concerns.

They probably chose the general anethesia to keep him still. It's very unlikely a 2 year old would be still while the dentist performs the procedure.

A child having "laughing gas" is safe as long as they are monitoring him while he's on it. Your son will still have freezing as the laughing gas will not put him to sleep. Sometimes the child is still not easy to work on.
