Our wedding is in April of next year. Our colors are regancy (purple) and silver, however I love the color black and would love to add it and maybe change regancy to lavandar but people keep telling me I can't do that because black is not a spring color. No one has invested any money on the colors yet with the exception of some silver candles that we may not even use. Is changing the colors a bad idea? If it is how could I add black into the wedding. I have already picked out a few bridesmaids dresses for the girls to try on that are black? Should I even bother to have them look at the dresses or just scrap the idea completely?

If you are having an evening or night wedding then black dresses are completely acceptable. Also, you can have 3 colors - black, lavender and silver. It's your wedding. Do what makes you happy.

I don't think black is a bad idea for spring at all! Black is elegant and timeless. One idea you might want to think of, is going with the purple or lavender, and adding a black sash to the dress, so that black is your complimentary color. You could also tie this is with your bouquets, by adding black ribbon, beads, feathers, or another accent filler. The table arragements could be done with the same as the bouquets, as well as corsages and boutineers, and decorations, coupled with the other colors.

Or, you could go the opposite. Have black as your main color, but spring it up with the purple or lavender, as your accent color. You can work the silver in too if you want. There is nothing wrong with those colors being coupled together, even in spring. Just try and give a bit of spring that will attract the eye to the spring color along with the elegant black.

I'm currently helping plan a wedding for September of this year and my bride's colors are black and purple. Black is never wrong except on the mother of the bride or the mother of the groom (as some people may take it that they are grieving over their child's selection of a spouse!). It's a really classy accent to a pastel color - makes it less nauseatingly precious and updates it. Lavender alone is kind of blah and a little bit little girlish, but with some black accents it's suddenly adult, chic and classy.

If you are feeling like the black will look too heavy for a spring feeling, use it sparingly. Black borders and type on your stationary, which is in a softer color overall. Some black accents in otherwise lighter floral arrangements. Some black in the dresses - I've seen black piping and sashes. I've seen black skirts with pastel on the top, or the reverse. I've seen a black print on pastel background -there are a lot of options. You can also just do black dresses but make the cut summery. For example, if the dresses aren't all fluffy and long they can look lighter. Fitted, strapless with a jacket or shawl and short - knee length - with pearls, for example can look kind of "Jackie O" and classy, but not heavy.

Hit the stores and the magazines and see what's out there - black is very popular, and you'll probably see a lot of ways to make it work for spring.
