Age a child can decide which parent to live with
At what age can a child decide which parent they want to live with and what are the steps that need to be taken? Thanks in advance

    18. If you would like to live with a different parent before that, the non-custodial parent would go to court and request a change of custody. If s/he can make a reasonable argument why it should be changed, there will be a hearing where your wishes *might* be considered, but ultimately it is up to the court to decide. Your feelings on the matter may or may not be taken into consideration.

Yes, until a child is 18, they may merely tell the judge what they would like but only the judge can change the court order.

Various states do provide guidelines to the judge on how much weight he should give to the child's wishes. But its always up to the judge to decide what is in the best interest of the child.
