I have a couple of months left on the original new car warranty on the 06 Ranger I bought used last week. My Ranger has <19,000 miles and is 3 months shy of being 36 mo. old. The original new car warranty is for 36,000 miles or 3 years.

I declined purchasing an Extended Service Warranty ( offered to me as a Major Guard warranty) when I bought the used truck last week (not from a Ford Dealer). They did include a power train warranty for 12,000 miles or 1 year when I bought it.

I have had time to reconsider now and wonder if it might have been worthwhile to purchase an extended service warranty.



Are these readily available through the Ford Dealer on a previously owned vehicle? I have noticed some are offered online.

Any thoughts on this? Has anyone had experience with these after-market extended warranties?

I would decline the extended warranty. Instead, I would buy a Service Manual and start using full-synthetic lubricants all around; i.e. engine, transmission, differential, and power steering system. Start a Maintenance Log and perform all recommended preventive maintenance.

Here are several items you need to do now:

. Change the brake fluid--Valvoline Brake Fluid meets Ford's HBH brake fluid requirements for trucks. It's important to do this every 2 years, whether specified by Ford or not. With a one-man bleeder, you can do the job in 45 minutes or less.

. Change the coolant--50/50 mixture of the manufacturer recommended coolant (most likely HOAT) and distilled water. Do this every 30,000 miles or 3 years, whichever comes first. Only use manufacturer-specific coolant.

At 30,000 miles:

. Change the air filter.

. Change the fuel filter.

At 40,000 miles, change the platinum spark plugs (Motorcraft only). Use the exact plugs that came in the truck. Ford might specify 100,000 miles, but don't believe it.

Start using premium oil filters (e.g. Purolator PureOne or Mobil 1). If you follow this regimen, your Ranger will go 300,000 miles or more.

I, too, would decline the aftermarket warranty, but for some very different reasons.

Let me explain: as a technician, when a customer would bring in a car that had aftermarket warranty, the adjuster would want to re-diagnose the vehicle and then try finding aftermarket (non-OE) or, even worse, used parts. Most often, this results in parts that aren't working or not compatible with your car. At the very least, major time delays.
Not because of the tech or the shop, but because of the adjuster/policy terms.

Also, from the other side, once a claim has been submitted, too much time passes before the insurance company pays the claim.

Like most insurance companies, they try to keep their costs down (and profit up) by replacing your worn or failed parts with the lowest cost replacements. That is usually not in your best interest for the life expenctancy of the vehicle nor for the does it take into consideration you being inconvienenced and going without your vehicle.
