Can dogs be left on their own?
    Hello
I was wondering what peoples opinions are in relation to - how long can a dog really be left on their own? I'm looking into getting a Lab (not puppy I must stress), and the dog could on some occasions be left on their own for about 6 hours. Although I would be looking into getting a dog walker, I just wondered what everyone's thoughts were.

    Many thanks

I think that so long as you are prepared to commit to spending lots of time with the dog when you are home, six hours alone is okay. Most people with dogs work, and this means time alone for the dogs. And if only people who don't work took in dogs, there would be far more dogs dying in shelters every year.

It is a very good idea to plan on a dog walker. But I think the most important consideration here is whether you are going to be willing and able to spend lots of time with the dog when you are at home. If you're up to that, then you should plan on giving a needy dog a good home. I do hope that you will look into taking a dog from a shelter, though, as they are in a desperate situation with time running out on them.

Thanks for that! I am looking into London Battersea, and a local rescue centre for labradors... so fingers crossed. Plenty of tim and love will be given when I am at home.
    Thanks again for you advice.

Dogs love their people and want to be around them all of the time. As we know that is not reality. Some dogs have separation anxiety and some do just fine alone for an 8 hour work day. You can give him something to keep him busy while you are gone, like Kong stuffed toys from the pet store. There are timed treat releaser's that give out treats at the times you set. Most older dogs sleep while you are gone and are ready to play when you come home. Do not ignore him. He has waited for you all day and he deserves your attention now. Just remember they love you no matter what so repay them with loving attention when you are with them.
