    Drawing molecule formula
    I know the molecule formula of shikimic acid C7H10O5 but I have to redraw it showing the bonds and atoms separately...

    When I get to the Carbon atom that that has a hydrogen branching one way and a oxyen- hydrogen the other way how would I depict that in a drawing ?

    Usually you just do something like this. The bonds from the C to the H are assumed.

    CH3 - CH2 - OH

    You can also do this

    ... OH
    ... |
    CH3 - C - H
    ... |
    ... H

    (ignore the dots. That's to keep the elements in line.

    The question asks to draw the structure showing all bonds and atoms separately.. This is what I've drawn... Does it make sense ? Many thanks

    O=C-O-H
    !
    C
    // \
    H- C C/H2
    !
    H-O-C C-H
    ! \ / \O-H
    H - C
    /!
    H
    O-H

    Yes, that's correct.

    To lurkers: You may be able to see it better if you click on "Quote User" on pugdom's last message. Otherwise, the spacing is so far off that it's difficult to see.
