Today I bought at Globe Enersaver thermostat model # 59010. I only have one heating unit, and off my old thermostat there are only 3 wires. 1 Green 1 Black and 1 Red. Following the instructions from the box, I installed it and everything was going fine, until after about 20 minutes of use.. it just shut off? So, after some fooling around with it, I returned it and replaced it with the same model. This one will not even turn on. It is a touch screen and it beeps and lights up when the screen is touched, but that is about it. I have pushed the reset button and still no change. Can anyone help me figure this one out?

Does the system function correctly with the original thermostat? If so, the new one(s) may be incompatible with your system, or require a low voltage common circuit to support their function.

The first one I bought worked fine for 20 minutes. There is a 4th wire that can be connected in the furnace to a "C" terminal. After researching I am 90% sure this "C" is for a common wire. I also tried hooking that up to the proper terminal on the thermostat, but still had no change. A blank screen that beeps and lights up. The red wire is also connected to the "R" terminal. I assume it is the "hot" or "24volt" line. The black one is hooked up to the "W" terminal which is the "heat" line, and the green one is hooked up to the "G" terminal for the fan.
Still will not work.
Considering just returning the unit. :(

The only reason that you would need the common wire is if the thermostat is operated by the 24 volts coming from the furnace. So is the thermostat battery operated?

Have you traced the wires out to make sure that they are wha you think they are?

Do you have a refrigerated air condition unit?

It is not battery operated. I have followed all the lines back right to the furnace and they are all what I think they are.
Red=R terminal in the furnace
Black=W terminal in the furnace
Green=G terminal in the furnace

I disconnected them from the old thermostat and checked which terminal they were connected to on it, and it was the same.. Red to the R terminal and so on. So I connected the new thermostat to the proper terminals.

I do not have a air conditioning unit.

This website Globe Enersaver Touch-Screen Thermostat tells about the unit. I have that exact model.

Is the 4th wire connected to the "C" terminal at the furnace?

The fourth wire (blue) was not connected to anything in the furnace. But after researching it felt confident that it was okay to connect it to the "C" terminal in the furnace, and then connected it to the "C" terminal on the back of the thermostat. Still no change.

Sounds like Globe Enersaver might be made by Hunter,or vise versa,,

What puzzles me is that the first one I bought worked fine with just the 3 wires hooked up... but then shut off after about 20 minutes. The one I bought to replace it won't even turn on, but is hooked up the same way.

First take a volt meter and see if there 24 -27volts at the furnace between r and c if you do your OK if not you touched them and blew the 3 or 5 atc fuse in furnace if no fuse you blew the transformer, check that first, make sure r-r w-w g-g and if you want c-c then you wouldn't need batteries in tstat. Let me know Mikie D.

Here's a thought: is the thermostat wire continuous/unbroken from end-to-end, or is it spliced somewhere between the ends? Check for splices that don't incorporate all the wires.

You said you bought a #59010 but the site you sent is for a #10630, so I am wondering if there is a difference in the two.

The details of the #10630 sounds like it is a very sophisticated thermostat and does not sound like a three wire thermostat.

I am not familiar with this brand of thermostat but if you could so how send the wiring diagram I would love to see how it is wired so I would know the next time this question comes up.

I had to put my old thermostat back on, and it functions properly, so I assume that I haven't blown any fuses. Also the breaker to the furnace was always shut off when I was working on the thermostat.

Sorry the model I do have is a 59010. It is the same, with maybe the difference of not being able to control humidity. The wiring is very simple according to the instruction booklet.
The back panel has 9 terminals that are in the following order:
H2 RC C H1 R OB W1 G Y

The instructions say for my type of installation "One-stage furnace only" to connect the common wire to the "C" terminal. (note this was never even hooked up to my old thermostat). The 24V to the "R" terminal. The Furnace to the "W1" terminal. And the Fan to the "G" terminal.
The only other option is for if a house has air conditioning and that is to connect a AC wire to the "Y" terminal.
In every wiring diagram the wires are connect the same unless you add another component like an air conditioner. ( and even that only requires the addition of 1 more wire)

Would there be some kind of alternate terminals to hook up the wires to? The instruction book does not tell you what the terminals on the back panel mean, such as... I have no idea what the H2 terminal would be for.

If not already present, try installing a jumper between "R" and "Rc" at the thermostat terminals.

I don't know what the C wire is for on this thermostat so I am going to show you the normal wiring for a furnace. You might try it and see if it makes your work.

At the furnace Connect it this way.

Red wire to the R terminal

Black to the W terminal

Do not hook up the Green wire or the one you say is common. You can connect the G to the G terminal at the furnace if you want to but it is not needed for heating.

At the thermostat.

Connect the Red wire to the Rh terminal if it has one if not connect to the R terminal.

The black wire to the W terminal.

Now about the Green wire, if your furnace is wired for the fan to run as a summer fan then connecting the G at the thermostat to the G terminal might make your fan blow by itself.

Just an update for everyone trying to help.. Globe (the manufacturer) doesn't even know what's wrong, so it must be in the unit itself. They told me to connect the common wire to the C terminal in both the furnace and the thermostat which I did.. and still it would not work. I am going to return the unit for a second time tonight, and try a different one I guess.

Just to close this chapter.. I was in contact with the manufacturer and they could not even help me.. so I returned the thermostat, and purchased a new one.. Now when I was in contact with the manufacturer, they said the common wire was a absolute must in the correct installation of this thermostat. In the instruction manuel, it says it is optional. I think they need to change that. To make a long story short, the new thermostat in now working properly.
