So the other day my husband and I were discussing the whole Saddam Hussin [sorry if I spelled his name wrong] and his video being leaked onto the media. Later to our discovery we find out that there are these disgusting [and I mean hurrendous] websites that are purley dedicated to "gross you out" or provide you with this twisted entertainment.

What these websites show are people being killed or hurt badly in accidents. My biggest issue is the videos on the net of people being tortured and murdered.

This made me so sick I cried and felt naseous to the point I could actually feel vomit rising.

I know we try our absolute hardest to keep child pornography out of the internet and try our best to prevent it from it even happening- but my question is:

Is there a way to stop from having videos of these people from being on the net? Is there some sort of legal way or anyway to charge or even arrest the "leaker".

I am just so sick and I want to do something about it, if your with me about this and would like to help please let me know!

a) you cannot stop the videos from appearing on the web unless the site is hosted in an area under your jurisdiction, most sites are hosted outside the US

b) there are ways to block domains so that they cannot be accessed at all from your computer

Those sites have been online for over 10 years. I fear your efforts will be wasted. Best to protect your home if that's a goal for you.

That is very true. I may take it up a notch and notify my town's mom groups. I am just so upset over this. I really do wish for world peace, so the violence would stop.

Sadley, there are some pretty sick people who actually enjoy looking on these sites, unfortunately I fear they will always exist.

All you can do really is prevent your computor from accessing theses sites... as previously stated.

It's the same across the board... tv, radio etc best thing to do is just switch it off.

I totally agree with you. I'm actually am making a project out of this. I know I am no politician, deep pockets, or a celebrity but I really would like to inform other families any way possible.

Maybe, one day I'll just be that one that started something. Like the one domino that causes a whole line to fall.

In short, no. The real answer is the internet is just too f****ing huge, fast and powerful for laws and ethics to regulate it. The RIAA recently rescinded on their lawsuits and will no longer sue anyone else who illegally downloads music, only because the cost of finding, building a case, and prosocuting these people was greater than the damages received from the offender. Plus, the RIAA were jerks in the eye of public when they made a point to sue single mothers, old ladies, pre-teens and even a dead woman.

Legally, I have no idea if sites like these can be stopped, but I'll take a stab and say "no" to this one, too. Like NeedKarma already wrote, websites are hosted all over the world, or are made to look like they are (spoofing), so regardless of any obscentity law there may be in any state, province or country, there's always going to be a loophole. The only thing all parties agree on worldwide, as you pointed out, is illegal smut and child pr0n, so most efforts to use the internet as a crime-busting tool go into that.

I have to say that I disagree with you, mudweiser, if you want to restrict one aspect of the internet you have to restrict it all, and that includes the good stuff like Wikipedia, YouTube, even stuff on Twitter. Hitler tried burning books of stuff he didn't like... that didn't work.

People need to understand that the internet is just a vehicle to transfer information, it is entirely up to the user to deem what is and what is not useful or obscene. If you don't like it, don't watch it.

When I was a kid (I am 31 now) we use to rent these movies called Faces of Death from our local video store. Just like the things you saw on the website but we are talking 15 or 20 years ago. This was some sick stuff. It was basically a "highlight reel" (wrong choice of words but it is the only way I could describe it) of people being shot, hit by trains, etc... So these types of videos are not new. So I imagine there isn't a law against them.

I share your outrage but sadly feel it is a losing battle.

Years ago I worked on a site such as this and was working on a board ,abuse and violence.
One of the OP's who came for help was a rape victim.

She informed us that she put the words *rape help* into a search engine and was shocked to find a video of a young girl being gang raped.
This only added to this girls trauma.

One of the people on the board was able to get the IP address and reported it to the webmaster that owned the domain.Where you pay by the month for a website and it was removed.

I tend to think that was a very rare occurrence that it was removed but it is certainly worth a try.

Google.ca now is partnering with something called ChillingEffects, removing ANY illegal stuff from Google. I'm not sure if the police get involved, I think they do though.

I just read this today in Slashdot, AT&T is taking action: Censorship comes to America: AT&T blocks 4chan /b/

It's am image board and made "Chocloate Rain" and the infamous "Two Girls One Cup" an internet sensation. Ya, it can be gross, offensive, and just wrong, but I think blocking it altogether is ludicrous.

There's no doubt that 4chan is the scum of the internet but the filtering does pose some concerns about business in the US. If there were good competition amongst broadband offerings for consumers then they would lose customers just on principle, but the reality is that there a serious lack of competition in this space. They have too much power such the barriers to entry are high for this sector.

As nasty as 4Chan can be, I've actually stumbled on websites that are much, much worse where their mission is to gross the viewer out, at least 4Chan can be funny.

They don't just post images - they attack sites and people (virtually). That's why they are scum.
