    Stats tax without iTIN
My wife is on H4. I am going to apply ITIN this year. Can I file state (CT and NJ) without iTIN? Can I put 'Applied For' on both state form and send them?

    Or

I have to wait till I get iTIN. Mean time, apply for state extension. Once I receive iTIN then file states form?

I am having the same problem, what is the option if you will not get ITIN till 15th?

    1. Wait without apply for extension.
    2. Apply for extension
    3. Apply state taxes by mentioning "Applied ITIN" ?

    Thanks for reply!

I did this for my wife in 2006. I did the following:

    1) Applied for ITIN and submitted it along with federal tax forms before Apr 15
    2) Filed extension for state taxes before Apr 15.
    3) Filed state taxes once I received ITIN

Normally for states file only when you get ITIN. Meanwhile apply for extension.

You CAN submit state returns wothout the ITIN for California and Indiana.

For everyone else, you must wait for the ITIN.
