Breaking a Florida lease before it starts
I signed a lease about 2 months ago for a year starting May 2009. I am no longer moving up to the area where my future apartment was going to be. Can I break a lease before it is put into action? Mind you I have yet to pay anything (security deposit, reservation fee, first months rent) and these are college apartments (Gainesville, FL).

I would immediately contact the apartment manager and explain your situation. The sooner you let them know, the sooner they can start looking for a new tenant.

Also, some states have laws that will hold you liable to pay rent for the apartment until the landlord finds a new tenant, regardless of if you paid a dime or not; you may want to check FL law to be sure.
